RM v Wigan St Pats Memorial Game
RM v Wigan St Pats Memorial Game.
The Corps started its 2012 season on Saturday at Wigan for the memorial game to two former local RM Wigan area/St Pats players; Sgt Steve Darbyshire and Cpl Liam Elms (KIA Op HERRICK).
Whilst the game was, for a fair amount of the match a WSP one-sided affair, the Corps rallied to match the opposition in the last 25 minutes running over two tries to Wigan's overall total of 6. It was a great education for our mix of experienced and complete novice players (mainly union transfers) and those who, given their age should by now know better. The event was well supported with around 500 in attendance.
Presentations were made from the Corps by Lt Col Bob Baxendale RM (Co-Chairman) and by Andy Gregory for WSP. The camaraderie at the social afterwards was superb, with the Corps squad being well hosted by their Wigan counterparts at the Clubhouse and ashore later on in Las Wigan. We had also previously invited both RMR Mersey and the local RMA branches along whose enthusiastic attendance helped add to the atmosphere and further promote RN/Civ unity through sport.
A yet to be confirmed, but sizable amount of money was raised on the day by WSP for the RMA, who themselves have decided that this donation should be held in a separate account within the RMA for the sole use of furthering the aims of this memorial match over the coming years.
A big thank you to all players and officials who made the trip.
On Sat Feb 18 2012, the RMRL will be travelling to Wigan for a memorial match versus local side Wigan St Pats in memory of two former players who lost their lives serving for the Corps in Afghanistan.
Corporal Liam Elms, 45 Commando Royal Marines, was killed in the Sangin district, Helmand province on 31 December 2008. Aged 26 and originally from Wigan, Elmsy was a regular for the RMRL.
Sergeant Steven William Darbyshire, 40 Commando Royal Marines, serving as part of Combined Force Sangin, was killed by small arms fire during a firefight with insurgent forces in the Sangin district of Helmand province on Wednesday, 23 June 2010. Aged 35 Darbs was a huge RL fan and RMRL player, also from Wigan.
